The SN program is an interactive, user-friendly program that provides a structured approach to spatial normalization of brain images. However, its capability extends well beyond those elements required for spatial normalization itself. The paragraphs that follow describe SN's primary capacity as well as its extended capacity as an image viewing and processing tool.
SN was designed to be a generalized software package with a balance between ease of use and the level of power required by the sophisticated user. A top priority in its design was the user interface. Novice users of SN require a minimum effort to learn the use of the interface. This means that most early training time can be be spent on actual spatial normalization concepts instead of awkward user interface concepts. This is accomplished through automation and careful selection of default values. However, advanced levels of function are available as processing requirements become more demanding and the user skill improves. In addition, SN was built with a modularity that allows constant upgrading and improvement/development of its features. Finally, compatibility with other programs (MIPS, Alice, DIPS, Image Toolkit, AIR) makes SN an integrated component of the overall image processing environment at the RIC.
