POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE

Brain Development and Aging in a Non-Human Primate using MRI and PET Imaging
Univ. Texas HSC, San Antonio

The Research Imaging Institute (RII) at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is seeking applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in the field of brain development and aging. The fellowship is supported, in part, by an NIH NCRR grant to study the development of the brain in a non-human primate species. The common marmoset is a small, relatively short-lived monkey that has lately received increasing attention as a valuable primate model of human brain in health and disease (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease) and whose genome sequence is nearing completion. Research will focus on describing the evolving maturational profile of cortical gray matter and white matter during early brain development and aging. Longitudinal data will be obtained in the same animal from neonatal to adulthood as enabled through high-resolution anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET). Marmosets will be made available through a breeding colony that has been established at UTHSCSA, while older (senescent) animals will be obtained through cooperation with the nearby Southwest National Primate Research Center. The RII has an expansive inventory of state-of-the-art imaging equipment, including new 7T and 11.7T dedicated animal MRI scanners, two 3T large-bore MRI’s, one clinical PET, two microPET cameras, two cyclotrons for radiotracer synthesis and an image processing division to support the fellow’s work. Additional information on other instrumentation and faculty interests at the RII can be obtained from: http://ric.uthscsa.edu

The candidate should have training in either MRI imaging or developmental neurobiology or both. Those not proficient in imaging technologies will have capable staff made available for such purposes, but should have good computational and analytical skills.

Applicants are invited to provide a cover letter and their CV/resume to:
